The lease period for ADK Hospital, including the land plot on which Male’ Health Centre is located, has been extended until 2045.
Speaking at a press conference held at ADK Hospital today, Chairman Ahmed Nashid said that according to the agreement between the hospital and the government, the lease period for ADK Hospital, along with the Male’ Health Centre area, had been extended until 2045.
He said that the Male’ Health Centre area has been leased at MVR 11 per sq ft for 32 years.
“Once the current contract expires, the rent will be higher at MVR 11 per sq ft from 2020 onwards. We believe the rent for the entire piece of land will be about MVR 1.5 million per month. This is not a small amount for rent, not a small amount at all,” he said.
Managing Director of ADK Ahmed Affaal said that ADK will undertake an expansion project worth $23 million through a loan taken from a German bank. He said that the project will facilitate progress and modern changes for the hospital.
He said that by the time the project is complete, it would be possible to provide treatments that are presently not available in the Maldives.
This includes the development of surgery rooms, and the provision of modern services for the elderly and people with fertility problems.
Affaal said that under this project, a solar energy system as well as a power station dedicated for the hospital would be established.
In addition, 22 rooms would be constructed as accommodation for people from the islands who come to Male’ to consult doctors, Affaal said.
He said that the number of beds would be increased by 87, which would solve the problem of lack of space currently faced by the hospital. The project would also facilitate free education for 10 students every year within the health sector.
Nashid said that the project would be completed within the next five years, and services will be provided at low prices that allow the hospital to cover the investment cost.
He said that the services provided by the Health Centre will continue to be provided gratis.
He said that the agreement was signed in 2010, but implementation had been delayed due to assessment of the agreement by various institutions.
The agreement to extend the lease period until 2045 was signed by Minister of State for Health Lubna Zahir and Managing Director of ADK Ahmed Affaal.
ADK was leased for 15 years in 2005 for an average rent of MVR 135,000 per month.
