Laamu Gan has a population of approximately 4000 people.
Abdul Raheem, a local entrepreneur in Gan told Sun that it has been about 10 days since the island ran out of cooking gas. He said that they have been unable to obtain the gas because the storage facilities in Thilafushi have refused to provide them the service.
“It has been about 10 days since the whole island ran out of gas. We’re unable to get the gas because when we go to Thilafushi, they refuse to refill. It is easy for people in Male’ to get the gas, but this is how we’re forced to live,” Abdul Raheem said.
Two weeks ago, the two major suppliers of liquefied petroleum gas in the country, Villa Gas and Maldive Gas had announced that they were facing certain delays in their gas shipment and warned of disruption to services to the capital Male’ and other parts of the country. However, at the beginning of last week, Maldive Gas said that they have lifted all restrictions on the control of cooking gas, country wide.
