Police have arrested a group of four people in Faafu Nilandhoo suspected of series of attacks on public and private property, including arson.
Police revealed that the four men were 20, 21, 23 and 32 year of age.
Police said the group were suspected of setting fires to uninhabited parts of the island and damaging public and private property. They were arrested around 7:50 pm Thursday night during a special operation by the island’s police station, police said.
They said that at the time of the arrest, the group were destroying a wall of a stage on the west side of the island’s west harbour. The island council recently built the wall to bar the entrances to the stage’s backstage area.
The island court has extended detention periods for all four people by seven days.
Police said that following the terrorizing incidents, they have increased the frequency of patrols around the island and have increased their halt and inspection of gangs who hang around in different parts of the island. They have also started to collect the information of people who are seen on island’s streets after midnight, they said.
