Presidential Candidate of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that if MDP comes to power, land will be given as assets from Male’, Hulhumale’, Gulheefalhu or Thilafushi to councils.
Nasheed said this while speaking at a rally in Alifu Dhaalu Mahibadhoo tonight.
He said that an MDP government would provide assets to each council to facilitate a monthly income of MVR 5 million.
“Each of these council will be given land [as assets] from Male’, Hulhumale’, Gulheefalhu or Thilafushi. The purpose is to increase your assets. The councils can do numerous things on their own once the asset value is increased,” Nasheed said.
Nasheed said that his government would provide an uninhabited island to Mahibadhoo, and also ensure employment opportunities for all youths of the island.
Nasheed noted that the Ari Atoll is the region with the most number of tourist beds, and said that his aim is to expand guesthouse business in Mahibadhoo and establish a transport system to ensure easy access to the island for tourists.
He said that travel will also be facilitated for tourists from the island.
“Only the tourists would know how it feels to be trapped in a resort. Wouldn’t he want to witness the life of the islanders in Mahibadhoo? When we talk to them, we know that they did not come here to sit by the beach alone. God willing, we will free them from being confined to the island,” he said.
He further promised to reclaim and expand the island before the end of 2015, and provide a housing plot to each youth in the island.
