President Dr. Muhammad Waheed Hassan Manik has met with a delegation of European Union representatives who visited the country from their official residence at Colombo, Sri Lanka.
The meeting was conducted today morning at the President’s Office. EU representatives discussed the current political strife in the Maldives, according to the reports from the President’s Office.
The President told EU diplomats that his major priority at the time was to establish peace and order in the country. He said that he was trying to form a government of national unity, and that he had invited former ruling party, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), to participate in that government as well.
The President also assured EU representatives that his government was willing and ready to conduct an independent investigation on the way in which former President Mohamed Nasheed had to resign. He assured that he would fully cooperate with independent bodies in discharging the functions and duties of presidency.
EU diplomats highlighted the importance of the participation of all political parties in forming a new government.
EU delegation included non-resident ambassadors appointed by the EU and some of EU member-countries for the Maldives.
