A police officer who passed by MDP Office attacked and injured

A police officer in uniform who passed by the Office of the former ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) in a motorcycle was attacked with a stone and injured last night.

A police media official said that the officer’s face was injured in the attack that occurred around 11:15 pm last night, and that the officer was hospitalized and under treatment as he spoke. The media official declined to give details of the injuries or the hospital where the officer was being treated.

At the time, MDP was staging a protest in front of the People’s Majlis House in contest of the arrest of an MDP parliamentarian for investigation of the vandalism and arson of a number of court houses and police stations in Addu City.

Police officers have recently received repeated death threats and warnings of various kinds, after the government of MDP fell from power on the 7th of this month. MDP government under former President Nasheed had to resign, when the police, and later the Maldives National Defence Force, refused to carry out a number of unconstitutional and illegal orders issued by Nasheed, in a bid to control the Maldivian judiciary.

After Nasheed resigned, MDP activists in various parts of the country, especially in Addu City, orchestrated a shocking series of vandalism, arson and terrorism, in which court buildings were burned and damaged, and police officers were attacked.
