Dr. Muhammad Jameel Ahmed, the newly appointed Minister of Home Affairs today assured the Maldives Police Service that they would not be subjected to any illegal orders by the government in the future. The Minister said that the police would at all times be required to discharge their duties and functions within the law.
The Minister met with the Police at the latter’s centre at Iskandharu Koshi today. Newly appointed Commissioner of Police, Abdullah Riyaz was with the Minister too.
Speaking at the meeting, Minister Jameel said that all opportunities would be given, and every required space would be readily provided by his leadership to ensure that the police would work independently and in perfect accordance with the laws of the country.
Dr. Jameel had repeatedly criticized the government of former President Nasheed for issuing illegal orders on the police. Nasheed had to resign after the police, and later the Maldives National Defence Force too, joined the people who protested against his government’s illegal actions which were enforced through the police and the military. Nasheed resigned, and his Deputy Dr. Muhammad Waheed Hassan Manik became President in accordance with the Maldives’ Constitution on Tuesday.
Dr. Jameel had previously served the previous governments of former President Maumoon Abdul Qayyoom and also of former President Nasheed, as Chief Judge at the Criminal Court, Minister of Justice, and the Minister of Communications.
