Home Minister Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has said that the cases relating to the damage caused in the protest led by former President Mohamed Nasheed last Wednesday will be submitted to the Prosecutor General’s Office within two weeks.
In an interview with Sun Online, Home Minister Jameel said that investigations are underway following damages in islands all over the country.
Dr Jameel earlier submitted a case to PG, alleging Nasheed’s regime of working against religious solidarity and sovereignty of the country.
“Investigations are underway in all parts of the country. Our aim is to complete investigations within two weeks and submit the cases to the Prosecutor General’s Office to be filed to court,” DR Jameel said.
Minister Jameel noted that cases like this have been prolonged in the past, however, assured Maldivian people that the penalties associated with crimes such as setting fire to state and private property will be fully implemented. He added that these crimes will be repeated if the people responsible go unpunished – something the country cannot afford right now.
Jameel said that following the fall of his government, Nasheed has been making false and untrue statements which have interfered with the restoration of peace in the country. He advised Nasheed and his allies to refrain from making such statements.
Jameel acted as Communications Minister in Nasheed’s government and as Justice Minister and Chief Justice in Gayoom’s government.
Police have arrested several people following the unrest last Wednesday which was provoked by the fall of Nasheed’s regime on 7 February. Violence spread to outlying islands, where substantial damage was caused to state and private property.
