Civil Court has today dismissed the case filed by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) asking the court to issue an order upon the Prosecutor General to terminate the indictment upon former president Mohamed Nasheed, for the case against him regarding the illegal detention of the Criminal Court judge Abdulla Mohamed.
An official from the Prosecutor General’s Office said that the court decided to dismiss the case as a representative from MDP failed to show up for its hearing today.
MDP’s case argues that the State violated Artilce 17 (non-discrimination) and Article 20 (Equality) in raising charges against former president Nasheed.
During the last hearing for the case, the Prosecutor General’s Office had called on a procedural discrepancy after quoting a precedent by Supreme Court Judge and claiming that the allegations in the case were invalid.
The procedural discrepancy noted by the Prosecutor General’s Office was scheduled to be decided at today's hearing.
All proceedings regarding former president Nasheed’s trial have been halted following an injunction by the High Court.
