Recycling program launched for empty Taza bottles

Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) in cooperation with Island Beverages Maldives (IBM) has launched a recycling program for empty Taza water bottles. The program, launched on the occasion of World Environment Day, is themed ‘individual responsibility for a green tomorrow’.

The Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottle recycling program was launched by Minister of State for Environment Abdul Matheen at a ceremony held at the head office of MWSC today.

Business Development Manager of MWSC Hassan Saeed said that the purpose of the PET bottle recycling program, aimed at households, is to protect the environment from the harmful effects of PET plastics.

“Under this program, arrangements have already been made to collect empty bottles when new Taza water bottles are delivered to households. The empty bottles will be shredded using a shredding machine,” he said.

He said that the shredded material will be sent abroad for recycling, and even though no money will be given to groups that return empty bottles yet, this arrangement will be made in the future.

IBM commenced recycling efforts in cooperation with resort customers in 2005.
