The United States has recognised President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik’s new government of Maldives.
Following a question by a journalist whether the U.S. considers the new government a legitimate government of the Maldives, State Department Spokesman Victoria Nuland replied, “We do.”
She was speaking at the daily State Department press briefing.
AFP reported that this development shadows former President Nasheed’s efforts to sell to the world that the current government is illegitimate.
Nasheed told AFP that he is “extremely displeased” that the US recognised the new government.
Neighbouring Sri Lanka and India have also recognised the new government.
An article in The Indian Express earlier said that India and Maldives “share a common destiny and have common security interests”, and that India is prepared to collaborate with the new government and work towards the development and security of both countries.
A statement released by the Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry said that they wish to continue the good relations between Sri Lanka and Maldives, and that the Sri Lankan government will fully cooperate with the new government in its efforts towards development and restoration of peace in the country.
