Maldivian arrested for fraud in Sri Lanka

A Maldivian has been arrested in Sri Lanka, accused of embezzling a large amount of money from a Sri Lankan citizen.

Sri Lankan newspapers report that a 35-year-old Maldivian was arrested by the Alawathugoda Police today for allegedly defrauding a Sri Lankan man of 3.5 million Sri Lankan Rupees.

The Maldivian national had taken the money from the Sri Lankan promising foreign employment, after which he had absconded, states Sri Lankan local media.

Sri Lankan Police said the suspect was arrested when he had visited the house of the complainant and that the man held an expired visa.

Sri Lankan Police are currently investigating the case.
