PIC forwards cases against 4 policemen for prosecution for criminal offences on the day of change of government

Police Integrity Commission (PIC) has stated that criminal cases involving four policemen regarding offences committed on the 6th and 7th of February last year, have been forwarded to the Prosecutor General (PG) for prosecution.

A statement released by PIC today revealed that the Commission has concluded investigations for 18 of the 20 cases that were submitted or investigated by Commission’s own initiative regarding the police misconduct on the 6th and 7th of February last year.

The statement said that 12 of the 20 cases involved assault and violence and that the remaining 8 were pertaining to issuing unlawful orders to the police, insubordination and neglecting police duties.

PIC said that 3 of the 4 policemen whose cases have been forwarded for prosecution are commissioned officers.

The Commission has chosen to publish their findings on the events of 6th and 7th February and has withheld their report for 8th of February 2012.

Vice President of the Police Integrity Commission Haalaa Hameed has previously stated at parliament committee inquiry that the Commission was investigating a total of 29 cases in relation to the events that took place in February last year and 6 of them had been forwarded to for prosecution at that time.

However, only one policeman, Ali Ahmed, Janavareemaage, Faafu Finilandhoo, was prosecuted from the 6 cases forwarded by the commission. Trial against Ali Ahmed has begun, although he still remains a member of the police force.
