Thai Prime Minister concludes visit to Maldives

Prime Minister of Thailand, Yingluck Shinawatra has concluded her visit to the Maldives. Vice President Mohamed Waheed Deen bid farewell to the Prime Minister at the airport this afternoon.

Prime Minister Shinawatra arrived in the Maldives on Saturday.

During her visit, she met with President Waheed and other state officials and discussed bilateral ties with the Maldives and Thailand.

A joint statement on the occasion of the official visit of Prime Minister Shinawatra to the Maldives was issued today. The statement outlines key areas of discussions that were held between the two countries and some of the outcomes of those discussions.

According to the joint statement, the two leaders expressed satisfaction at the strong and growing trade relations between the two countries and agreed to double trade volume bilateral trade between the two countries by the year 2018.

Recognizing that people-to-people contacts are an important part of the relations between the two countries, the Thai government invited more Maldivians to visit Thailand for medical treatment. As such, it was agreed that the conclusion of a visa waiver agreement in the near future would increase people-to-people contact.
