Thai entrepreneurs briefed on investment opportunities in the Maldives

A group of visiting entrepreneurs from Thailand has been briefed on the investment opportunities available in the Maldives.

The briefing session was conducted for the entrepreneurs who accompanied Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra who arrived in Male' today on an official visit to the Maldives.

Held in Stelco Building seminar room today, the session was attended by officials from the Maldives Ministry of Economic Development, Ministry of Environment and Energy and owners of large businesses in the Maldives.

The group from Thailand was briefed on a number of ongoing and prospective projects in the Maldives, including the the redevelopment of the Male’ Commercial Harbour, the land reclamation project for the second phase of Hulhumale’ development project and the recent call for Expression of Interest for the establishment of a medical college in Hulhumale’.

Economic Ministry presented a paper to the session, which stated that the government has now opened a new joint investment opportunity to develop and manage a harbour in Thilafushi island by reclaiming 65 hectares of land. The paper also revealed new opportunities for the second phase of the Hulhumale’ development project, including projects for establishment of hotels and hospitals.

The paper by the Economic Ministry also stated that companies interested in taking up the project to establish a medical college in Hulhumale’ must be willing to sign a concession agreement with the government, binding for a period of 25 years.

Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture also presented a paper to the session. It highlighted the growth and development of the tourism sector in the Maldives and informed of the opportunities for joint government investments that are currently open in the tourism sector. It also stated that the government is looking to establish a tourism training facility to equip locals and foreigners with the proper training to serve in the tourism industry.

The paper presented by the Ministry of Environment and Energy highlighted the efforts to use solar power as a renewable source of energy in the Maldives and emphasized on the demand on solar power as a renewable source of energy.
