President Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has said that the visit by the Prime Minister of Thailand Yingluck Shinawatra to the Maldives has enabled the two countries to forge a “partnership that would create new horizons” in the relationship between the Maldives and Thailand.
President Waheed made these remarks at a banquet hosted in Kurumba Maldives by the President and First Lady Madam Ilham Hussain in honour of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, who is currently in the Maldives on an official visit.
The President said that the renewed partnership would also create new opportunities for the peoples of the two countries to explore their entrepreneurial talents.
Stressing that the relationship between the Maldives and Thailand was built on shared values and interests, President Waheed also said the two countries also face similar challenges.
In his speech, President Waheed also praised the Prime Minister for the “bold steps” she had taken and “the new vision” she has set out for Thailand.
In her remarks, the Prime Minister noted that this is her first visit to the Maldives and that she hoped that her visit would open new avenues for cooperation between the two countries.
She said that she looks forward to improving ties and cooperation between the two countries in business investments, especially in the area of tourism.
Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra commended Maldives’s efforts to combat climate change. She said Thai government would extend its support and cooperation to the Maldives in this endeavor.
