The garbage accumulating in the garbage dumping area are being transported to Thilafushi by dhoni (conventional boat).
Member of the Male’ City Council Ahmed Abdul Kareem (Rukuma) said today that the garbage being transported by the dhoni are only those garbage that are being newly thrown into the area and that the existing heap is being cleared off by transporting them on a barge.
Sun reporters who visited the garbage dumping area this morning observed a large dhoni docked near the dumping grounds, on to which the garbage was being loaded. The ground and lagoon area was found to be littered with garbage fallen off during the transport from the dumping area to the dhoni.
“We have just started this as a trial, we’ve been taking the garbage onto the dhoni since around 09:00 last night. We are trying to clear the dumping area in about two to three day’s time,” Abdul Kareem said.
He said that the council has been receiving complaints from the public due to the unpleasant smell originating from the dumping area and that they hope to completely clear the area within the week.
Councilor Ahmed Abdul Kareem said that the Council has hired three different dhoni’s at special rates for the task. He however did not specify the rates.
