The man who was riding the motor cycle that hit and killed Abdullah Gasim, 43 of Raiyfusge, S. Hithadhoo, has been convicted of mugging and robbery and sentenced to a fine of MVR 12,000 with two years and six months in prison.
Ahmed Naadhee Saleem, 21, of Nooruhsabah, Gaafu Alif Gemanafushi was sentenced today after the three charges set against him by the state were proven in the Criminal Court.
Announcing the sentence to the court, Criminal Court Judge Muhuthaz Muhsin said that Naadhee’s confessions has proved that he stole a motorcycle parked in a parking zone near H. Twighlight, around 9:25 on the night 16th of August last year. The Judge sentenced him to one year in prison for the crime.
Announcing the sentence for mugging, Judge Muhuthaz said that even though Naadhee has rejected the accusation that he had mugged a mobile from a foreigner who was standing near shop in Majeedheemagu around 9:45 on the night of 17th of August last year, the crime has been proven against Naadhee based on the evidence presented by the state and thus, the judge sentenced him to an additional one year in prison.
Sentencing Naadhee for the crime of obstructing the responsibilities of the police, the Judge announced that Nadhee had disobeyed an order by the police when he, accompanied by another man, had refused to stop while he was driving a motor cycle at a fast speed from west to east on Orchid Magu (road) near Salsa Royal around 10:30 am on the morning of 17th of August last year and thus, sentenced him to six months in prison, in addition to a fine of MVR 12,000.
The charges set against Naadhee by the State includes mugging and robbery charges through gang activities. The Judge however said that it could not be proven to the court that Naadhee had committed to mugging and the robbery though gang activities.
Judge also said that this being the first instance that Naadhee has been convicted of such crimes, it entitles him to be considered for lighter sentencing but said that he was given a heavier sentence in light that his actions had resulted in the death of a person.
