Eight people have been arrested for creating unrest in Maradhoo in Addu City today, while the police were conducting checks after receiving information of assault between two groups in the island.
The police said that the suspects are men; one aged 19, two aged 20, one aged 21, one aged 22 and two aged 27.
Police said that officers went to the area at around 15:15 today where the two groups had gathered to fight, and checked them for weapons used for fighting. The eight people tried to obstruct the police, threw stones at officers, and created unrest.
The police said that after this incident, a group threw stones at police vehicles and tried to block Addu City Link Road, and created further unrest in Addu City.
The police have also refuted claims that some members of the public were harmed by police officers in this incident. The police said that no child or woman was harmed by the police, and no excessive force was used in the incident.
The case is currently under police investigation.
