President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has said today that the government will not prevent former President Nasheed from leaving the country.
Speaking at the first press conference held at President’s Office since he took oath of office yesterday as President of Maldives, Dr Waheed said that his government will work within the framework of the law and that President Nasheed has the freedom to depart the country if he wishes to do so.
“Nothing prevents former President Nasheed from departing the country now. Nothing that I am informed of,” the President said.
President Dr Waheed said that he will not be involved in any legal action taken against the former President for any illegal practices undertaken by him.
He also said that the Police have been instructed to cancel any list issued to prevent members of the former government from departing the country. He said that the new government did not authorise such a list.
“I was informed last night of the existence of a ‘travel ban’ list. I assure you that no such list has been issued by the current government,” President Dr Waheed said.
He said that if a list was issued to prevent members of the former government from leaving the country, the list was made by the former government.
