President ratifies First Amendment Bill to Local Council Election Act

President Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has today ratified the First Amendment Bill to Act number 10/2010 (Local Council Election Act), which was passed by the 24th sitting of the first term of Parliament this year, on the 29th of April 2013.

Following ratification, the bill has now been published in the Government Gazette.

The amendment allows the island and atoll councilors to stand for re-election for a subsequent term of office without resigning from their posts.

Article 12 (a) (vi) of the Local Council Elections Act previously prohibited any person filling an elected office stipulated in the constitution to stand for elections for an office of the local councils.
