Fiyoari also suffers damage due to bad weather

The Council of Gaafu Dhaalu Fiyoari has said that the island has suffered damage, including roofs of houses being blown off and falling of trees, due to the bad weather being experienced in the Maldives.

President of Fiyoari Council Mohamed Ahmed told Sun Online that the bad weather that hit the island on Sunday left several houses without roofs, and palm trees and breadfruit trees fallen.

He said that in addition, the yam crops planted by the people in preparation for Ramadan were also destroyed.

Efforts are under way by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) to drain the flooded areas in the island, including the yam farms.

Mohamed Ahmed said that the island had been visited by several groups since 2009 to conduct surveys on how to prevent flooding in the yam farms every time the island faces heavy rain. He expressed concern on behalf of the island people and council, over the failure to establish a system until today.
