Two people have been arrested in relation to the assault that took place in Gaafu Alifu Nilandhoo on 9 May 2013.
A Media Official of the Maldives Police Service said that the suspects are aged 20 and 21, and that the arrests were made yesterday in Nilandhoo.
He said that the 20-year-old was released when taken to court for the extension of his detention period.
Hamdhoon Gasim, 22, sustained serious injuries in the attack and is being treated in Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
Council Member of Gaafu Alifu Nilandhoo Asif Mohamed said that the incident was reported to the police at around 21:00 on the night that the assault took place; however, by the time the police arrived in the island it was 01:30 in the morning.
He noted that the police have a post in Gaafu Alifu Dhaandhoo, which is just ten minutes from Nilandhoo, and said that the delay by the police to arrive in the island is likely to hinder their investigation of this case.
