Adhaalath Party’s Scholars’ Wing President Sheikh Ilyas Hussain has said that he was summoned for a second time to the parliamentary committee reviewing the Penal Code Bill because the members of the committee do not know the Islamic principles governing the issues in question.
Ilyas has been accused of making misleading statements saying that some sections of the Penal Code Bill contradicts with Islam.
The committee has summoned him for questioning regarding his statement during a sermon, whereby he said that the purpose of the Penal Code Bill was to ‘crush and destroy the religion of Islam.’
In an interview today, Ilyas told Sun that the committee members say that the bill does not include any section that contradict with Islam because they do not have sufficient religious knowledge to know the truth.
He said that he will use phrases from the Quran and the Prophet’s Hadith to explain the truth about this matter when he attends the committee.
“I stand firm with what I said earlier. I will attend the committee and prove how it is [in Islam]. I don’t think they know too well how it is in Islam. That’s why they still say that there’s nothing contradictory,” he said.
Adhaalath Party’s Media Committee President Abdulla Humaid told Sun earlier that the party sees no reason for the Sheikh to be summoned to the committee since the committee had already added a clause to the Penal Code Bill in an attempt to cover up their previous stand on the matter, after Sheikh Ilyas had made his statements during the sermon.
Ilyas has been notified to attend the committee on 15 May.
