EC accepts MPs

In spite of the decision by the Elections Commission (EC) not to process political party membership forms until advised by the Supreme Court, it has come to light that the EC has processed the membership forms of the Members of Parliament (MPs) who recently joined political parties.

Secretary General of the EC, Asim Abdul Sattar told Sun Online that the membership forms of Nolhivaram MP Mohamed Nasheed and Speaker of Parliament Abdullah Shahid, who recently joined political parties, have been processed, and the parliament duly informed of the change.

The Supreme Court has issued a temporary order, asking all relevant groups to halt all efforts that may lead to the dissolution of political parties, until the court makes a decision on a case filed by the State requesting to declare void some sections of the Political Parties Act.

Following this order, the EC earlier said that it had stopped processing all membership forms until the court makes a decision on the case filed by the State.

When asked why only the membership forms of MPs are being processed, Asim said that this is being done following a decision made by the members of the EC.
