The Congress of Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) has passed to dissolve its most honorary post, ‘Zaeem’ (Leader).
The post of Zaeem was reserved especially for the party’s founder, former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. Article 73 of the party’s Basic Regulation, which describes the post, was removed with 602 votes in favour. The motion was voted against by ten members.
Article 73 (a) of DRP’s Basic Regulation states that the post of Zaeem shall be the most honorary and prestigious post in the party, and 73 (b) states that the post shall be reserved for the founder of DRP, former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
The fourth Congress of DRP commenced this afternoon.
Members have passed all nine amendments proposed to the Basic Regulation except one, which stated that any person who applies for posts in the Youth Wing of the party shall have turned 31.
Members will also be elected to the post of DRP Deputy Leader, at the Congress which is attended by about 700 members and will go on until Thursday.
