Thasmeen owes MVR 1.9 million to Nazim: High Court

The High Court has ruled that Leader of Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) Ahmed Thasmeen Ali should pay MVR 1.9 million to Deputy Speaker of Parliament Ahmed Nazim, the amount outstanding from the MVR 2.55 million borrowed by Thasmeen from Nazim.

This ruling came after Thasmeen appealed the Civil Court ruling, which stated that he should repay the MVR 1.9 million, in High Court.

The ruling stated that there are no grounds to change the Civil Court ruling whereby Thasmeen was ordered to repay the MVR 1.9 million. The court however voided the Civil Court ruling which granted MVR 1,800 following Nazim’s request for MVR 100,000 as lawyer fees for this case.

Nazim’s lawyer said in Civil Court that Thasmeen had promised to repay the loan within one month, and that there was no agreement that indicated otherwise.

As Nazim’s claims were proven in court, the court ruled that Thasmeen should pay MVR 1.9 million to Nazim.

The Civil Court stated in its ruling that Nazim notified Thasmeen to repay the money before 25 November 2010, and that this request was not met by Thasmeen.

Thasmeen appealed the Civil Court ruling in High Court on 9 June 2011.
