India to provide seven new radar systems

The Ministry of Defence has said that India has decided to provide seven radar systems - in addition to the three that are already in place - to the Maldives.

This decision was made during Defence Minister Mohamed Nazim’s recent visit to India, on an invitation by Indian Defence Minister A K Antony.

A statement issued by the Defence Ministry tonight states that Nazim returned from his official trip to India on Saturday, and that during this trip, India had agreed to provide a helicopter to be used for Search and Rescue and Emergency Evacuation in northern Maldives.

In addition, Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has said that Indian Defence Minister A K Antony had assured that the Indian government will provide financial assistance for the construction of a Coast Guard Building, a special harbour for Coast guard vessels, as well as for the establishment of an MNDF Composite Training Centre project in Lhaviyani Maafilaafushi.
