President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has called on the youth to stand in upcoming elections.
The President made this remark while addressing the people of Huraa this morning.
The President noted that the youth advocate change, and said that the youth, especially those working in the tourism sector, want to see swift development in the country.
He said that the youth and members of their families want to enjoy modern services and amenities, and that this can only be made possible if the youth work with the government, and share their ideas and expertise with the government.
The President also spoke on the role of women in the islands, and said that the Women’s Councils need to be strengthened, and that efforts have to be made to increase income for the councils. He said that this would only be possible by listening to the ideas of the women and the youth in the islands.
The President noted that the work of the island leaders and people had resulted in great progress for the islands in the past. He said that development is evident in islands in which people are united and active, and that Huraa is a noteworthy island in this regard.
The President reflected on the country’s situation when he assumed office, and said that peace and order had been restored as a result of the work done since he assumed office.
As part of his visit to Huraa, the President met with the island Council to learn about the ongoing and planned developmental projects in the island.
