President Mohamed Nasheed has said today that the judicial system, one of the most important powers of the state, is in a disabled position.
Speaking at his weekly radio address to the nation today, the President said that even though the three powers of the state are separated, the judicial system is the same as before and without any improvement.
He said that the problem of the country’s judicial system is a national problem that is too important to be left without a solution. However the government has faced challenges as soon as steps were taken to regulate this system.
Referring to the protests taking place every night in capital Male’, he said that few people fuelled by political motives are holding protests. They damage private property are a nuisance to the public. He condemned these practices and said that legal action will be taken against these individuals. He also said that the government will continue to work towards restoring harmony in the society.
The President further said that the current government’s policies are explicit, written-down and published. He said that he is dismayed by the fact that opposition groups do not have the potential to criticise these policies.
“The fact that opposition parties’ criticisms towards these fruitful policies hold no educational backing is proof that they do not have the potential to function in this competitive political atmosphere,” the President said.
The President emphasised the importance of the existence of a steady opposition party. He said that it is a challenge to practice democracy when the opposition groups lack the potential to function in such an environment
