Current ruling party MDP has held a protest and called to reform the courts and to end the series of protests by opposition groups in order to restore peace in capital Male’.
The protest was led by several members of MDP Parliamentary Group and commenced after Asru prayers near Republic Square today. They called security forces to make efforts to end the series of protests conducted every night.
They soon moved on to the area near Supreme Court, and called for the arrests of Judicial Service Commission (JSC) President Adam Mohamed Abdulla and Maamigili MP Gasim Ibrahim. They also called lower court Judges to tender their resignations.
When Police intervened and moved the protesters from this area, they moved on to Justice building area. They raised their voices near Hilaaleege, the residence of Vice President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik.
They said that it is not acceptable that the Vice President holds meetings with opposition groups and supports them. The confrontations which took place as the crowd tried to enter Hilaaleege were controlled by the Police with the use of pepper spray.
With the crowd near Hilaaleege broken up, protesters ended the demonstrations at MDP main hall.
At the end of the protest, MDP Interim Chairperson said that MDP members will take to the streets to stop the opposition protests tonight.
Thoddoo MP Ali Waheed also said that they will put an end to opposition protests tonight. He further said that Chief Judge of Criminal Court Abdulla Mohamed will not be released for as long as President Nasheed is in power.
