Gasim Ibrahim nominated as presidential candidate of Jumhooree Party

Jumhooree Party Council has made the official announcement to nominate Gasim Ibrahim as their presidential candidate for the Presidential Elections next year.

Gasim Ibrahim, who was the fourth most popular candidate in the first round of Presidential Elections of 2008, said in an interview with Sun online last night that he is delighted to accept this nomination and that he will announce a running mate and begin campaigns shortly.

“God willing, I will make preparations to the best of my ability. I will announce a capable running mate – the details of this announcement are being discussed by party leaders as we speak. This is how I will proceed,” Gasim said.

Gasim asked Maldivians to not feel hopeless, and said that he will work towards bringing prosperity to the Maldivian people.

Gasim also said that he would support the nomination of a presidential candidate by forming a coalition and holding a primary election. He said that these discussions are currently ongoing with opposition groups.

Recent member of Jumhooree Party and renowned businessman Abdulla Jabir cited the lack of time as a reason for losing the 2008 Presidential Elections, and said that this time around they will have enough time to hold proper campaigns and win the Presidential Elections of 2013 with “2000 percent” votes.

He also said that discussions have been held with one opposition party regarding the nomination of Gasim’s running mate.

PPM Parliamentary Group Leader Abdulla Yameen has indicated he will accept the nomination as Gasim’s running mate subsequent to Gasim’s victory in a primary election.

Yameen has further said that the announcement of him competing as a presidential candidate in the 2013 Presidential Elections was made out of his personal interest, and that he will not hesitate to act as running mate of any presidential candidate nominated following a primary election.

When asked if he would accept the role of Gasim’s running mate, Yameen replied, “without a single doubt.”

“There is no doubt about that. I will accept the role of Gasim’s running mate. I will follow Gasim,” Yameen said. He also said that if this situation arises, he would prefer to elect a running mate by holding a primary election.

Gasim received 27,128 (15.3%) votes in the first round of the 2008 multi-party presidential elections. In the second round, he joined the MDP coalition which won the election with 54% votes.
