Former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed has launched a collection of short stories titled ‘Kuruvaahaka – 80ge Kureekolhu’.

The book, the title of which translates to ‘Short Stories – Early 80s’, was launched by his aunt, Zuhaira Umar, at an event held at Dhon Manik Sky View in Male’ on Saturday evening.

At the book launching event, Nasheed, the chairperson of the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) said he wrote the short stories after he was released from jail to home confinement in the 1990s.

“I wrote these stories in ’94, shortly after I was transferred from jail to home confinement. Therefore, there’s certainly no ‘President Nasheed’ in these stories,” he said.

The book is a collection of five short stories; ‘Chaalaa Zaman’, ‘Hithaai Hithuge Gulhun’, ‘Moosabaru’, ‘Gaumee Mashroou’, and ‘Reethi Hadhiya’.

Speaking further, Nasheed described short stories as the best medium for understanding how things change.

A shared story is what makes a nation, he said.

Nasheed’s collection of short stories is priced at MVR 250.

Nasheed had been a journalist and an author with an avid interest in Maldivian history even prior to entering politics.

His other published works include ‘Dhagandu Dhahana’, Killaa Male’’, ‘Dhe Radhun’, and ‘Veriyehge Nimun.’
