In the congested streets of Malé, crowded with buildings and vehicles, even a young child understands the seriousness of road accidents. With more than 200,000 people living in the small capital, hardly a day goes by without reports of an accident.

Navigating streets packed with cars and motorcycles comes with significant risks, and road users increasingly face the danger of being involved in an accident. These incidents often leave families devastated and grieving. Yet, an important question remains: how many people actually know what to do when an accident occurs?

The question is particularly relevant given the behaviour often witnessed at accident scenes, where bystanders take photographs or record videos even when victims are seriously injured. Although this does not necessarily mean people are unwilling to help, such actions can create the impression that assistance is not their priority.

The correct course of action during an accident

Dr. Amaal Najeeb, a Medical Officer at ADK Hospital, has outlined the appropriate steps to take in such situations. Actions taken at the scene can save a life, while incorrect handling of an injured person could worsen their condition.

If you are driving and witness an accident, the first step is to pull over safely to the side of the road. After ensuring that it is safe to do so, approach the injured person cautiously while remaining alert to surrounding traffic.

Dr. Amaal advises contacting the police and requesting an ambulance as soon as possible. "Clearly describe the location of the accident, the nature of the incident, and the number of people injured," she explained.

Important emergency numbers to remember:

IGMH Ambulance: 102

Maldives Emergency Medical Services (MEMS): 102

ADK Hospital: 1440

Police: 119

One aspect that often causes confusion is the role of the first responder. Their primary responsibility is to offer reassurance and emotional support to the injured person. This can be done by speaking calmly, informing them that an ambulance has been called, and assuring them that someone will remain with them until help arrives.

Accident scenes often attract crowds of onlookers. The first responder should ask people to keep their distance and ensure the area around the injured person remains clear. This allows the victim to breathe comfortably and helps minimise panic.

Basic assistance can be provided while waiting for the ambulance. If the injured person is bleeding, for example, gentle pressure can be applied to the wound using a clean cloth. However, Dr. Amaal strongly cautions against moving a limb if a fracture or dislocation is suspected, advising that it should be left in its existing position.

Dr. Amaal also stressed that injured people should not be moved from where they have fallen unless absolutely necessary. "This is to prevent worsening any potential injuries to the head, neck, or spine caused by improper handling. If the person is conscious, ask if they can move on their own. If they cannot get up or are unconscious, do not attempt to force them up or carry them."

Helmets should only be removed if the injured person is having difficulty breathing or vomiting. Even in such circumstances, removal should be carried out with the assistance of another person, with one person keeping the head and neck stable while the other carefully removes the helmet.

When the ambulance and paramedics arrive, bystanders should give them sufficient space to provide medical care. Dr. Amaal noted that responders should clearly explain how long the injured person has been waiting for assistance and what measures have been taken. Further assistance should only be provided if requested by the paramedics.

Following professional guidance at accident scenes is essential, as improper actions can place injured people at greater risk. In a city like Malé, where road accidents are a frequent concern, knowing how to respond appropriately is a responsibility every citizen should take seriously. Even one life saved through timely and proper assistance can make an immeasurable difference.
