A 60-year-old man from GA. Villingili has been arrested in Male' for allegedly deliberately crashing into a motorcycle with a pickup.
The suspect was arrested Wednesday for allegedly deliberately crashing into a motorcycle with a pickup.
He has been remanded in custody for five days upon presentation before the court for a remand hearing on Wednesday following his arrest. As such, his remand is set to expire on March 10th.
The Police have accused him of dangerous driving that resulted in a traffic collision. According to the remand order, the individual suddenly swerved his pickup into the motorcycle lane and intentionally struck a motorcycle. The order, citing the investigating officer, stated that the motorcyclist sustained injuries in the crash.
Dangerous driving is strictly prohibited under Maldivian law and carries serious penalties. Article 62 of the Land Transport Act requires all individuals operating land vehicles to ensure road safety and to drive in a way that does not endanger others.
Driving in a manner that threatens lives or property is considered a criminal offense. Authorities have the power to suspend or revoke the licenses of dangerous drivers, impound vehicles for a specified period, and impose fines in accordance with the law.
Since the start of Ramadan, several other traffic-related incidents have been reported. In one case, a pickup driver was penalized for blocking an emergency ambulance while unloading goods. Police confirmed that appropriate action was taken in that incident as well.
