Ministry instructs removal of vehicles and vessels from Tsunami Monument to MPL by Saturday

The Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development has on Wednesday, ordered the removal of vehicles and vessels parked from the Tsunami Monument area to MPL to facilitate the widening and modernization of Boduthakurufaanu Magu. 

In an announcement, the ministry said development on the stretch between Tsunami Monument and MPL will begin under the Boduthakurufaanu Magu Development Project, and all vehicles, vessels and other objects obstructing the area must be cleared by Saturday 11 pm. Items not removed by the deadline will be confiscated by the ministry.

The West Park section of the road has already been closed for the third phase of the widening and tarring works. The first phase of the project, launched in August last year, widened the road from the Fish Market to Republic Square to four lanes. The second phase extended the four-lane development from Republic Square to Henveiru Ferry Terminal.

Work on the MPL section is now ready to begin while preparations continue to relocate the commercial port to Thilafushi. The government says modernizing all roads, including water, sewerage, electricity, stormwater and fire-hydrant systems, is essential to solving flooding and congestion in Male'. Housing Minister Dr. Abdulla Mutalib said the project will cost USD 100 million.
