RDC ruled incapable, Addu road project to be awarded to new contractor

Housing Minister Dr. Abdulla Muthalib says that the government has decided to award the project to redevelop the roads of Addu, including the city’s link road, to a new contractor, after the Road Development Corporation (RDC) was unable to conduct the mega infrastructure initiative.

RDC was awarded the MVR 829 million Addu road project back on April 8, 2025. The company had been tasked to complete the project in 11 months, but failed to conduct any practical works over a year since.

Speaking at the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) congress on Tuesday, Muthalib said the RDC was unable to overcome the challenges it faces and conduct the project.

“We tried to start the project by awarding it to RDC. Given the RDC’s current state, it wasn’t easy for the company to carry out the works, even after bringing in the machinery. They were unable to find a clear path to proceed with the project,” he said.

Muthalb said the project would be awarded to a new contractor based on the contractor-financing model by next week, by the latest.

However, he did not name the new contractor.

The decision comes with the RDC set to be merged into the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).

The delay in the project comes as residents of Addu continue to voice concern over the state of the link road that links the city’s islands.

Muthalib states that the government aims to begin practical works on the project before the end of October.
