Maldives and China sign new cooperation agreement on prosecutor training and research

China’s Supreme People’s Procuratorate (SPP) and the Prosecutor General’s Office of Maldives (PGO) have signed a new cooperation agreement focused on training prosecutors, conducting joint research and strengthening institutional collaboration between the two countries.

Prosecutor General Justice Abbas Shareef signed the agreement on behalf of Maldives at a ceremony held at the SPP headquarters in Beijing. His Chinese counterpart, Prosecutor General Ying Yong, signed on behalf of China.

According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, the two Prosecutors General held formal talks prior to the signing. Discussions centred on the digital transformation of prosecution services, including the potential use of artificial intelligence (AI) in case management and criminal justice processes. Both sides also noted the longstanding cooperation between the SPP and PGO and explored ways to further enhance collaboration.

Under the agreement signed on Monday, a framework will be established for professional training, joint research, and technical assistance in mutually agreed areas. The agreement also includes provisions to ensure the confidentiality and security of information exchanged between the two offices.

The new agreement renews and replaces the cooperation framework first signed between the two offices in May 2017, expanding its scope to reflect modern prosecutorial needs and emerging technologies.

The talks in Beijing were attended by Deputy Prosecutors General and senior officials from both countries. Deputy Prosecutors General Mahmood Saleem and Aishath Mohamed represented Maldives at the meeting.

The Prosecutor General’s Office described the agreement as an important step in strengthening practical cooperation between the two prosecution agencies, particularly in areas of technical expertise, capacity building, and the exchange of professional knowledge.

Prosecutor General Abbas is currently on an official visit to China at the invitation of the Supreme People’s Procuratorate. During the visit, he is scheduled to meet with heads of prosecution agencies in Beijing and other provinces.
