Nine more homes sustain damages as floods continue to devastate Addu

At least nine more homes reported damages on Sunday, as floods unleashed by heavy rain continues to devastate the southern city of Addu.

On Saturday, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) stated that over 70 homes in the Feydhoo district of Addu and two more Maradhoo sustained damages due to flooding. This included a house in Feydhoo that sustained extensive damages, disrupting access to essential services and rendering it uninhabitable. The eight people living in the house were moved to a temporary shelter.

On Sunday, the NDMA stated that islands in southern Maldives continue to sustain major damages due to the ongoing rains.

At least nine more homes in Feydhoo reported flood damage on Sunday.

The NDMA states that damage to one of the houses rendered it uninhabitable, and that the authority has provided temporary shelter to the family living there and arranged food for three days.

 The NDMA has also arranged food for three days for three more homes severely affected flooding.

Fuvahmulah City is also experiencing extensive flooding, with multiple homes reporting disruptions to sanitation services. The city council, Fenaka and other institutions are engaged in joint efforts to assist the affected families.

Maldives Meteorological Service forecasts fairly widespread rain with occasional heavy showers and thunderstorms across the country on Sunday.

The weather agency also forecasts southwest/westerly winds in southern atolls and west/north westerly winds elsewhere at 13 – 23 miles per hour, with gusts of 40 miles per hour during showers.

Seas are expected to be rough with waves of 5 – 7 feet.
