Gov't to introduce paid parking outside office hours in new ring road parking zone

The government has decided to introduce a small fee for parking in the newly developed parking zone on Boduthakurufaanu Magu.

Economic Development and Transport Minister Mohamed Saeed announced the decision at a press conference held on Wednesday.

Speaking at the briefing, Saeed said the plan is to charge a low, on-demand fee for vehicles parked in the area during non-office hours. However, he did not disclose the exact amount that will be charged.

“For example, we are considering charging a small payment during the hours except office hours. For example, there are touch-and-go places on an on-demand basis in other countries as well. We are also putting in place some such facilities,” he said.

The minister also reiterated that parking will not be allowed in the newly developed stretch of Boduthakurufaanu Magu itself.

Male' continues to face severe congestion due to the high number of vehicles, and the lack of adequate parking has been a long-standing public concern.

As part of efforts to ease the problem, the government plans to begin construction of two parking buildings in Male' this year. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has also established a special office dedicated to resolving traffic issues in the capital.
