Six killed, several trapped as building collapses in New Delhi

At least six people have been killed and several others injured after a multi-storey building housing college students collapsed in the Indian capital, New Delhi, local authorities confirmed.

The building, located in Southwest Delhi's Satya Niketan—a dense hub for paying guest (PG) accommodation near Delhi University's South Campus—collapsed around midday, triggering an immediate large-scale rescue operation.

"Teams from different agencies are carrying out rescue operations on a 'war footing'," Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated on the X platform.

Emergency personnel pulled 11 people from the rubble and transported them to local medical facilities.

Four individuals were declared dead on arrival at the Trauma Centre at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), whilst a fifth person in critical condition later succumbed to their injuries. One more person was rescued during the overnight rescue operation but was brought in dead, taking the death toll to six.

Hospital officials stated that three patients remain admitted under treatment, another underwent limb surgery, and one individual was discharged after receiving treatment for minor injuries.

Ongoing investigation

According to Delhi Police, the structure was a 40- to 50-year-old building comprising a basement and five upper floors.

Officials confirmed that repair work was actively underway in the basement when the structure collapsed.

Police confirmed they are in the process of registering a First Information Report (FIR) against Anand Bansal, who ran the student accommodation facility named "Hostel Daze".

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences over the tragedy, calling the collapse "distressing."

"Condolences to those who lost their loved ones. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured. Authorities are working at the site and assisting those affected in the mishap," Modi's office stated on X.

Search-and-rescue operations continue at the site to locate any remaining survivors.
