The Utility Regulatory Authority (URA), the governing body for waste, electricity, and water services, has undergone a structural change to include seven board members, including a Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
The changes have been made under the second amendment to the Utility Regulatory Authority Act, which was ratified by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on Sunday.
The amendment introduces legislative changes aimed at strengthening the administrative governance framework of the URA`. Key provisions include increasing the number of Board members and revising the procedures governing their appointment, eligibility requirements, and terms of office.
Under the amended law, the Board of Directors, which previously consisted of five members, will now comprise seven members, including a Chief Executive appointed by the President. The amendment also requires the appointment of a legal professional to the Board and establishes formal procedures for the conduct of Board meetings.
The amendment further requires the additional members of the Authority’s Board of Directors to be appointed within 30 days of the Act coming into force.
Following its ratification by the President and subsequent publication in the Government Gazette, the amended Act has come into effect.
