Father of two, went missing in the landing craft sinking less than a month after arriving to work in the Maldives.

In the small village of Makrahi Dhuswa in Uttar Pradesh’s Ambedkar Nagar, a young woman, Aarti, waits anxiously with her two young sons for any news of her husband.

His elderly mother, Chandrawati Devi, whose eyes remain filled with tears, pleads, " Someone please bring my son back. If he is alive, bring him home safely." The hopes of the entire family are pinned on 36-year-old Rajeev Chauhan, who traveled to the Maldives in pursuit of a better life.

According to reports in the 'Times of India' citing his family, Rajeev arrived in the Maldives on the 22nd of last month to work as a tiler for a construction company.

Having previously worked in Saudi Arabia, Rajeev came to the Maldives with dreams of providing a prosperous life for his family. However, within just a week of his arrival, he met with a tragic accident.

Rajeev last spoke to his family on July 30th. The following day, July 31st, news reached them that the vessel he was traveling on to another work site had capsized due to severe weather.

While eight people on board the landing craft were rescued, Rajeev and one other individual went missing at sea.

More than two weeks have passed since the incident, and with no news of Rajeev, his family is consumed by distress and fear. Speaking to the Times of India, Aarti said that although Maldivian authorities claim to be conducting a search operation, they have not received any satisfactory updates. The family’s concern has deepened as they have been unable to contact the company Rajeev worked for since the accident.

The family is now seeking intervention from the Indian government. Rajeev’s father, Ram Awadh Chauhan, has reportedly reached out to the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry of External Affairs for assistance.

Despite the harrowing circumstances, the family continues to hope for positive news and for Rajeev’s safe return.
