Spanish media: Maldivian student pilot injured in plane crash

Spanish news outlets have reported that a 27-year-old Maldivian student pilot was injured in a plane crash in Spain.

According to a Spanish media outlet, the Maldivian student sustained head injuries and fractures to his ankle and leg. Meanwhile, Spanish newspaper ‘La Rioja’ reported that 26-year-old flight instructor who was also aboard the aircraft reportedly suffered serious injuries to his head and cervical vertebrae.

The aircraft crashed from an altitude of approximately 300 feet into an agricultural area known as ‘Ulagosa’ in Viana. The aircraft was a twin-engine Tecnam P2006T operated by the ‘FlyBy’ flight school, which was conducting ‘touch-and-go’ training exercises at Agoncillo Airport.

According to the reports, the aircraft was carrying a flight instructor with more than 700 hours of flying experience and the Maldivian student, who was reportedly in the final stages of his pilot training. However, further details regarding the student’s identity have yet to be confirmed.

While ‘La Rioja’ identified the injured student as Maldivian, two other news outlets reported that the individual involved was a Pakistani national.

Attempts to obtain an official comment from the Maldivian Foreign Ministry regarding the incident have so far been unsuccessful.

The Spanish Civil Aviation Accident and Incident Investigation Commission (CIAIAC) has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
