VIA records 621 tonnes of sea-to-air transshipment cargo, highest in a month

Velana International Airport (VIA) has recorded its highest-ever monthly volume of sea-to-air transshipment cargo, handling more than 621 tonnes in a single month.

Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), the operator of VIA, said the achievement marks a significant milestone in the airport's sea-to-air and air-to-air cargo operations. The company added that total transshipment cargo handled during the month exceeded 2,000 tonnes, setting a new all-time record.

Highlighting the Sea-to-Air service, MACL said 621 tonnes of cargo were dispatched last month, the highest monthly volume recorded since the service was introduced.

According to MACL, the milestone reflects VIA's growing role as a key logistics hub in the Indian Ocean, strengthening connectivity with major markets across Asia, Europe, and other regions.

The government has previously stated that the Maldives' strategic geographic location positions the country as an ideal cargo transshipment hub. Industry officials have also noted that the Sea-to-Air model—under which cargo arrives by sea before being transported by air—is a widely adopted global logistics strategy that helps reduce costs while accelerating delivery times.
