Tholhath

The hearing scheduled for today regarding charges taken up against former Defence Minister Tholhath Ibrahim Kaleyfaan for the illegal detention of Criminal Court judge Abdulla Mohamed, has been cancelled.

An official from the Judiciary Media Unit said today's hearing was scheduled for 16:00 this evening and that it has been cancelled as Tholhath’s health does not permit him to attend the hearing.

The last hearing for Tholhath’s trial heard testimony by witnesses; former Commission of Police Ahmed Faseeh and former Deputy Commissioner of Police Ismail Atheef, presented by the State. Hulhumale’ Magistrate Court, the court in which the trail is being contested, has said that the next hearing will also include hearing of testimony by witnesses presented the State.

Tholhath is being charged under Article 81 of the Penal Code for the willful arrest and detention of an innocent person.

Former Commissioner of Police Faseeh had testified during the previous hearing that Tholhath had said at a meeting held at the Police Office on 16 January 2012 that the president had asked to arrest Chief Judge of Criminal Court Abdullah Mohamed, and that the request was thus carried out.
