Parliament Chair has said that the proper action will be taken against those who impeded Parliament privileges after MPs called for points of order at the Parliament session today, demanding action alleging that their privileges were impeded during a rally that was held last night under the banner “Parliament back to the people.”
Calling for points of order, MPs said that last night's National Movement rally heard speeches that defamed the Parliament. After the MPs started to reiterate this incident, the Deputy Speaker MP Ahmed Nazim of the Parliament who chaired today’s session, said that the matter will be dealt with according to the Parliament Privileges and Powers Act.
The Chair however did not state whether the matter will be discussed on the Parliament floor or if it will be sent to a Parliament committee.
Article 4 (a) of Parliament Privileges and Powers Act states that any action that would hinder the respect commanded by the Parliament or obstruct the work done by the Parliament shall be considered an action directed to impede their privileges. The Act also states the fines and imprisonment as penalties for impeding such privileges.
Speaking at last night’s National Movement rally, Adhaath Party President Sheikh Imran Abdulla said that they will drag the members out of the Parliament before the end of their terms if the Parliament fails to give into the public’s demands.
