We will only stop after we reform the Maldives judiciary: National Movement

“People’s National Movement” has said that the main purpose of their recent activities and gatherings is to reform the judiciary and that they will not stop until their objective is accomplished.

The Movement held a rally last night after a long break since the GMR issue had subsided. Speaking at the rally, one of the Movement’s senior leaders Sheik Imran Abdulla said that although there are a lot of problems in the Maldives judiciary, nobody has put an effort to solve them.

He said that judiciary must be based on Islamic Sharia and the Constitution, and that it must be independent. He said that the judiciary must have the capability to pass a sentence on anyone, even if it is former President Nasheed. He said that this time around, the judiciary will be reformed by the people.

“What are the problems in the judiciary? Everybody just think about it deeply. The real problem with the judiciary is that they are also humans. They also have people who have greed for money and property. They are also people who will sin, because of the weaknesses they possess. So the people that I have just mentioned have been caught in these things,” Imran said.

Imran said that some people have been entangled in their actions and that its consequences are terrible.

“What are the results? By using these immoral things, and by abusing their desire for money, the people who have money and resolve to blackmail have influenced them in different ways, and they have kept the judiciary under their power. Manipulated it to their will. Made the judiciary pass down the sentence they wanted to pass,” Imran said.

Imran also strongly criticized former President Nasheed during last night’s rally. He said that the only thing that is free from Nasheed’s influence in this country is the judiciary and from that, especially the Supreme Court.

Imran said that Nasheed is getting prepared to take the judiciary under his control, and that he does not want to face the upcoming presidential election without having the judiciary under his power.
