Maldives Police Service has urged the public not to engage in any behaviour that could disrupt peace and safety during tonight’s highly anticipated World Cup match.

Excitement around the World Cup is running high in the Maldives, with large crowds gathering to watch matches on big screens placed in public areas across Male'. After late-night screenings, it is common for some supporters to celebrate on the streets.

In a message posted on X on Wednesday, police noted that tonight’s match between Argentina and England is expected to draw significant attention. The agency urged fans to respect the rights of others and avoid actions that disturb public peace.

Tonight’s game is scheduled for 00:00 midnight, a time when most people are resting. Police reminded supporters to refrain from loud singing, excessive noise, and honking vehicles in residential areas and public roads.

Police also advised people not to stop their motorcycles in ways that obstruct other road users while watching the match on public screens. The agency further asked supporters not to gather in large groups after the match or drive around in flocks, noting that such behaviour can disturb neighbours and inconvenience motorists.

“Therefore, when you participate in the excitement of the match, give priority to the rights of children, the elderly and neighbours,” police said.

Football enjoys strong support in the Maldives, and many foreign nationals living in the country also join the celebrations. Support for Argentina is particularly prominent.
