Kudahuvadhoo MP Ahmed Amir has been assaulted by Dhaandhoo MP Mohamed Riyaz (Dhaalu Riyaz).
The incident took place during a meeting of the Parliament Committee on Independent Institutions today regarding the Supreme Court ruling on the issue related to Fahmy.
As soon as the meeting began, Amir and Vilufushi MP Riyaz Rasheed alleged that the meeting was being held in violation of the regulations and tried to stop the meeting. This was followed by Dhaalu Riyaz attempting to obstruct Amir from using the microphone to speak.
Amir refused to give the mic to Dhaalu Riyaz, and Riyaz hit Amir on the right shoulder and pushed him. The assault was shown live on Raajje TV and could be seen by the reporters in the committee room.
Amir told Sun Online today that Riyaz also punched him in the jaw, and that he brought the matter to the attention of the Committee Chairperson by saying that such criminal incidents are taking place repeatedly. He said that the Chairperson however did not take any action.
Riyaz said he was assaulted by Amir as well and that both of them engaged in violent behaviour. Reporters of Sun Online present at the committee meeting room however did not witness Amir hitting Riyaz.
Afterwards, hostile verbal exchanges continued to take place between the two MPs in the corridor.
Riyaz Rasheed was the only member representing the government coalition to attend today’s committee meeting.
